LONDON, Jan 9 (Reuters) - The London Metal Exchange (LME) saw record trading in 2013, with volumes up 7.1 percent on the previous year and market share expanding to 84 percent.
LME said on Monday 171.1 million lots of metal were transacted, equivalent to $14.6 trillion and 4 billion tonnes of material.
Copper and aluminium set new trading records, with volumes up 11.6 percent and 8.1 percent respectively last year compared with 2012.
The LME nickel contract saw the biggest surge in trading, with volumes rising 23.1 percent year on year. Zinc, cobalt and molybdenum also set new records, with volumes up 2.1 percent, 4.0 per cent and 11.1 percent respectively.
By the end of 2013, the LME's market share reached 84.2 percent of global exchange-traded metals futures, up 1.3 percentage points from 2012, it said.
