Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) the world's fourth largest aluminium smelter, has announced a new production record of 890kt for 2012, up from 881kt the previous year.

Operational improvements, a dedicated workforce and teamwork are cited by Alba's CEO Tim Murray and chief operations officer, Isa Al-Ansari as the reasons behind the smelter's success.

According to Murray, Alba achieved the record figure without any 'significant additional capital expenditure'.

Last month, Alba contracted Canada-based Bechtel to conduct a feasibility study into a planned $2.5bn expansion plan that will see the addition of a sixth production line. The new line will add a further 400kt per annum to the current 881kt/yr and will be completed early 2015.
